I don’t want to spend a lot of money, but I found a used one on Craigslist that was like $40, and it just looked like a big walkie talkie, would this be good enough? I just wanna be able to sit in my car and pick up where police or firemen are going and be able to go, would this be adequate for that?

Do American Police Scanners Work In Canada?
Yes, but if it is not programmable, then you would have to get new crystals for it. Of course, even in America, you would need to get new crystals for it if you move to a new area.
If it is programmable, then you can simply find out the new frequencies. Be forwarned though, that newer US scanners still cannot pick up cellular phones in Canada.
