Humanists believed in the great potential power of the human being and his innovations. Before that, most people believed people were pretty much worthless and all great things came from God.
The printing press brought about the ability to rapidly spread ideas and greatly increased literacy.

The Printing Press helped increase literacy and helped spread Martin Luther's Protestantism. Without the pamphlets, his message wouldn't never reached England. England's Henry VIII wouldn't never broken away from the Catholic Church and created the Angelican one. No St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre. No Thirty Years' War. And so on :). Thanks, printing press.
